A Message from the President & CEO Of Wellnest

Dear Wellnest Community,

Our hearts are heavy as we witness the devastating fires that have engulfed the Greater Los Angeles area, leaving a trail of unimaginable loss. Homes and cherished possessions have been destroyed, displacing countless families and shattering their sense of security. We grieve with those who have lost so much, and we stand in admiration of the courage and selflessness of our first responders, whose dedication and bravery remind us of the strength within our community.

In times like these, it is more important than ever to stand together and support one another. At Wellnest, we are committed to helping children and families navigate the emotional toll such disasters can bring. Traumatic events like these can leave children feeling scared, anxious, and uncertain. As caregivers and community members, we play a critical role in helping them heal and regain a sense of safety.

Here are a few ways we can support our children through this devastation:

  1. Open Communication: Encourage children to share their feelings and fears. Listen with empathy and validate their emotions, letting them know it’s okay to feel scared or sad.
  2. Provide Reassurance: Remind children that they are safe and loved. If possible, create routines to restore a sense of normalcy and stability in their daily lives.
  3. Limit Exposure to Distressing News: While it’s important to stay informed, too much exposure to news about the fires can heighten anxiety. Instead, focus on positive stories of recovery and resilience.
  4. Practice Stress-Reduction Techniques: Engage children in activities that promote relaxation, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, drawing, or playing games.
  5. Seek Professional Help When Needed: If a child is showing prolonged signs of distress, such as trouble sleeping, extreme fear, or withdrawal from loved ones, consider reaching out to a mental health professional for support.

Parents and caregivers must also take care of themselves. Children often take emotional cues from adults, and your well-being is key to helping them cope. Lean on community resources, friends, and loved ones for support during this challenging time.

As we come together to rebuild and recover, let us hold those impacted by these fires in our thoughts and prayers. May we find strength in unity and hope in the resilience of our community.

If you or someone you know needs mental health support, Wellnest is here to help. Please reach out to us at (323) 373-2400 or email contact@wellnestla.org.

Together, we can face these challenges and emerge stronger than ever.

With compassion and hope,

Charlene Dimas-Peinado
