Helping Children to Regain a Sense of Safety during the Los Angeles Fires

Jan 13, 2025 | Press Release

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 13, 2025) In times of crisis, standing together and supporting one another is more critical than ever. Wellnest is dedicated to helping children and families navigate the emotional impact of disasters, offering vital mental health services and resources to help with healing.

Traumatic events such as the fires in Los Angeles can leave children feeling scared, anxious, and uncertain. Caregivers and community members, have an important role in helping them to regain a sense of safety and stability.

Here are some ways to support children through the devastation from the fires:

  • Open Communication: Encourage children to express their feelings and fears. Listen with empathy and validate their emotions, letting them know it’s okay to feel scared or sad.
  • Provide Reassurance: Remind children they are safe and loved. If possible, create routines to  restore a sense of normalcy and stability in their daily lives.
  • Limit Exposure to Distressing News: While it is important to stay informed, too much exposure to news about the fires can heighten anxiety. Instead focus on positive recovery and resilience stories.
  • Practice Stress-Reduction Techniques: Engage children in calming activities such as deep breathing, mindfulness, drawing, or playing games.
  • Seek Professional Help When Needed: If a child is showing signs of prolonged distress, such as trouble sleeping, extreme fear or withdrawing from loved ones, consider reaching out to a mental health professional for support.

It’s equally vital for parents and caregivers to prioritize their well-being. Children take emotional cues from adults, and maintaining caregiver wellness is essential for helping children cope. Lean on community resources, friends, and loved ones during this challenging time.

“As we work together to recover and rebuild, let us hold those impacted in our thoughts and find strength in the resilience of our community,” said Charlene Dimas-Peinado, President & CEO, Wellnest.
